Ohio’s 4x Finalist… Get’s It Done!!!

Over the last 4 years, one wrestler in the State has had a huge gorilla on his back. Without knowing exactly when the gorilla climbed on board, I can only imagine he was heavy.

After beating several State Champions over his career to earning 3 straight trips to the OHSAA State Wrestling Finals, Nick Kiussis had to walk off the mat after watching his opponent’s hand get raised.

3 Straight Trips, 3 Runner-up Finishes.

For some, that would be a very successful High School Career. But when you have one more year to get the job done, even with the question lingering,

Will Nick be the first wrestler in Ohio Wrestling History to be a 4x Division I State Runner-up?

I’m sure the Gorilla made himself known…

To make this an even more interesting story, Nick was lucky to have a very talented competitor in his weight class. Talented enough to win 3 State Titles with one year left.

Kyle Lawson from Olentangy Liberty was looking to become one of Ohio’s Elite 4x State Champion’s… In his way stood Nick Kiussis, Ohio’s only 3x State Runner-up.

Ironically, these two met earlier in the year where Nick made his mark by “upsetting” Kyle in the finals of the Bill Dies Tournament back in January.

All while setting the stage for Columbus, OH at our prestigious State Tournament.

Unfortunately for Kyle, he lost his quarterfinal match. Nick on the other hand, continued dominating his side of the bracket earning his 4th straight trip to the State Finals. Standing in his way was Elyria’s Brendan Price.

Kiussis opened the match with a takedown in the first period. Price escaped and got another to tie the match in the second period.

With the match tied, Kiussis stayed aggressive and scored another takedown with near fall, giving himself a 5 point lead.

An escape and another takedown later, Kiussis, a West Virginia commit, secured the win 10-3 and finished the season with a 41-3 record and a STATE TITLE to take home.

Shoutout to the Kiussis Family… It’s been a long ride that had a lot of ups and downs. But in the end, good things happen to good people!!!

Congrat’s on an incredible high school career filled with awesome memories you’ll never forget. The University of West Virginia is going to be proud to have you as a member of their team.

Proud of ya Nick!!!
